Short Attention Span Record Reviews - Holiday Shopping Guide Edition

AMY BLASHKE – Opaline
Not really country but an unusual combination of country rock, folk and soul, Blashke somehow ends up in Lee Halzewood territory. This is a thing of beauty. (8)

ARCS – The Arcs Vs. The Inventors, Vol.1

The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach’s got a new band and he invites his musical heros to jam on limited edition 10-inch LPs. The first one features Dr. John and David Hidalgo (Los Lobos). (8)

BARONESS – Purple

Sort of like Mastodon with pop hooks after hiring Brian May as their guitar tech. (8)

KAMASI WASHINGTON – The Epic

It’s not that I was late in discovering the best jazz album of 2015, I actually started listening to it when it was released but the album duration is about 7 months. (9)

RIHANNON GIDDENS – Factory Girl EP

Songs that didn’t make it onto 2015’s excellent Americana album “Tomorrow Is My Turn”, just as good as those that did. (8)

SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY & THE ASBURY JUKES – Soultime!

The inventor of the New Jersey sound, Nikola Tesla to Springsteen’s Thomas Edison, Southside Johnny pays tribute to the golden age of soul with an album’s worth of original material that sounds just like a Junior Walker / Sam & Dave / Isaac Hayes / Curtis Mayfield party mixtape. (8)

TENEMENT – Predatory Headlights

Really good old school alt-rock/pop-punk album. At 78 minutes long some filler is inevitable but come on, let’s party like it’s 1995. (7)

TINARIWEN – Live In Paris

Trance-inducing desert rock jams from our favorite Tuaregs, recorded live in front of a raucous Parisian audience gone wild. Must hear. (8)

THORBJORN RISAGER & THE BLACK TORNADO – Songs from the Road

Hard rockin’ blues growler from Copenhagen backed by a band featuring a kick-ass guitarist, a funky rhythm section and a couple of awesome brass players, recorded live and having a blast. (7)

VARIOUS ARTISTS – Bobby Gillespie Presents Sunday Morning Comin' Down

Excellent moody mixtape put together by Primal Scream frontman: The Byrds, John Barry, Tim Buckley, Gram Parsons, even three in a row from the Beach Boys, all blend seamlessly. (8)

20+1 Albums Για Το 2015

Το I Was A Teenage Μusic Geek

Μετά από ώριμη σκέψη λοιπόν καταθέτω προς επιμόρφωση/ενημέρωση των πολυάριθμων fans μου την καθιερωμένη ετήσια λίστα με τα 20+1 αγαπημένα άλμπουμ της χρονιάς για το I Was A Teenage Music Geek, αλλά πρώτα μία γενική παρατηρήση:

Και τα soul. Και τα pop. Και τα folk. Και τα avant garde).

  • BELLE AND SEBASTIAN διότι δεν είναι συνεργασία της Patty La Belle με τον Sebastian Bach.
  • MUMFORD & SONS διότι αλήθεια; Σοβαρά τώρα; ΜΑ ΠΟΙΟΣ ΑΚΟΥΕΙ ΑΥΤΕΣ ΤΙΣ ΜΑΛΑΚΙΕΣ ΕΠΙΤΕΛΟΥΣ;

20. D’ANGELO & THE VANGUARD – Black Messiah / KENDRICK LAMAR – To Pimp A Butterfly

19. VHOL – Deeper Than Sky
Supergroup με μέλη από Hammers Of Misfortune, Yob και Agalloch, καλύτεροι και από τα τρία βασικά groups των μελών του.

18. ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF – The Miraculous

17. STEVEN WILSON – Hand. Cannot. Erase.

16. GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR – Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress

15. BEACH SLANG – The Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us

14. KILLING JOKE – Pylon

13. THE SONICS – This Is The Sonics
“Strychnine”, “Psycho”, “The Witch”:

12. J.D. McPHERSON – Let The Good Times Roll

11. TITUS ANDRONICUS – The Most Lamentable Tragedy
Φέτος κυκλοφόρησαν το δεύτερο πιο γελοιωδώς φιλόδοξο άλμπουμ της χρονιάς μετά το “The Rose Of Roscrae” με τίτλο “The Most Lamentable Tragedy” – μια εξαιρετική ροκ όπερα σε 5 μέρη που, αν κατάλαβα καλά, έχει ως κεντρικό θέμα τη μανιοκατάθλιψη.

10. TOM RUSSELL – The Rose Of Roscrae

9. REFUSED – Freedom
και από τα πνευστά του “War On The Palaces” (το “Bitch” των Rolling Stones ανάποδα;) στο παρανοϊκό “Destroy The Man” οι Refused βαδίζουν στο δικό τους, μοναχικό δρόμο που κανείς άλλος δεν τόλμησε να ακολουθήσει τα τελευταία 17 χρόνια. Ταπεινή προσωπική άποψη: Οι Refused ξαναγράφουν (και πάλι) τους κανόνες του hardcore, όπως είχαν κάνει με το “The Shape Of Punk To Come”.

8. JESSICA PRATT – On Your Own Love Again

7. NAPALM DEATH – Apex Predator / Easy Meat

6. JULIA HOLTER – Have You In My Wilderness

5. LIGHTNING BOLT – Fantasy Empire

4. GOATSNAKE – Black Age Blues

3. JOHN GRANT – Grey Tickles, Black Pressure

2. JIMBO MATHUS – Blue Healer

1. GHOST – Meliora

Short Attention Span Record Reviews - Dec 2015

ATLANTA RHYTHM SECTION – Ten Best
Harder than the Doobie Brothers and cooler than a southern rock Toto, ARS was one of those great Tier-2 70’s bands truly epitomizing the post-hippy, pre-punk spirit. This greatest hits package is so good it’ll make you dive into the deep album cuts next. (8)

DANIEL MENCHE & MAMIFFER – Crater

I love you Aaron Turner but you’ve just given me a migraine. (6)

DANZIG – Skeletons

Glenn turned 60 this year and he can’t pull his shtick off very well anymore. This covers album is not among the highlights of his career. (6)

ERYKAH BADU – But You Caint Use My Phone

The soul diva describes this as a “mixtape”, it’s basically a telephone-themed sexy R’n’B album combining cover versions with remixes of her own songs. (7)

FRANK TURNER – Ten For Ten

“The First Ten Years” is a 4-disc box set with non-album tracks and rarities. “Ten For Ten” is that box set’s Disc 4 but it’s also released as a separate digital download and contains, well, non-album tracks and rarities. (7)

NATALIE PRASS – Side By Side: Live at Spacebomb Studios

EP featuring live versions of 2 tracks from her Dusty Springfield-influenced debut album plus covers of songs by Anita Baker, Grimes and Simon & Garfunkel originals, deliberate choices for that extra WTF oomph. (7)

SHYE BEN TZUR, JONNY GREENWOOD & THE RAJASTAN EXPRESS – Junun

Radiohead guitarist Greenwood and Israeli composer Tzur team up, pull a Page/Plant and go all exotic on your ass. The only difference is they choose Northern India instead of Northern Africa. (8)

SUNNO))) – Kannon

Scary bearded dudes in hooded robes continue their never-ending quest for that elusive shit-in-your-pants-inducing low frequency. (7)

TOM WAITS – Transmission Impossible

Live radio performances from the 70s and 80s. Not really a bootleg but not exactly Waits-approved either, hardcore fans will love it nevertheless. (8)

THE YAWPERS – American Man

Sons of Springsteen, younger and rowdier cousins of the Hold Steady. Good stuff. (7)

Short Attention Span Record Reviews - Mid-November Update

ADELE – 25
Dear music industry,
If this bunch of soppy piano ballads is
your last hope then you better kiss your ass goodbye.
Sincerely,
(6)

ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF – The Miraculous

Burdened at birth with a name like Anna Michaela Ebba Electra Von Hausswolff the poor child had no choice but to grow up a goth. (8)

ERIC CHURCH – Mr. Misunderstood

If country star Church’s previous album “The Outsiders” was his Bon Jovi moment then “Mr. Misunderstood” is his John Mellencamp. (6)

JEFF LYNNE’S ELO – Alone In The Universe

ELO is very MOR and FYI I was BBB. (5)

GRIMES – Art Angels

It’s not a bad pop record, but “weird/unique” does not necessarily equal “great”. (7)

MATTHEW SWEET & SUSANNA HOFFS – Completely Under The Covers

Between 2006 and 2013 Sweet & Hoffs released 3 albums covering their favorite songs. Now in Box Set format with a 4th disc featuring bonus tracks, this plays like “Children Of Nuggets” or a mixtape you made for someone you really, really like. (9)

QUEEN – A Night At The Odeon

It’s Christmas 1975, “A Night At The Opera” has just been released, and Queen are playing live at the Hammersmith Odeon fronted by a Freddie Mercury who’s more camp than a boy scout jamboree. (10)

Short Attention Span Record Reviews, November 2015

THE LOUDER STUFF

BEACH SLANG – The Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us

Anyone remember what great bands Jawbreaker and Hot Water Music were? Don’t you just miss that 90’s melodic punk when you were 20 years younger and allowed to get away with loving the escapist stuff? (8)

BILLY GIBBONS & THE BFG’S – Perfectamundo

ZZ Top guitarist explores his funky Cuban side, has lots of fun and shares it. (7)

EVIL BLIZZARD – Everybody Come To Church

UK post-punk/space rock band with metal influences and two gimmicks: a) they wear masks and b) they’ve got four bass players. Imagine Hawkwind as covered by Killing Joke jamming with PiL and a couple of extra bassists. (7)

REVENGE – Behold.Total.Rejection.

Revenge’s black metal still sounds more like grindcore than anything else. This is so ridiculously chaotic and extreme you can only admire the dude. (7)

VHOL – Deeper Than Sky

Supergroup consisting of Yob, Hammers Of Misfortune and Agalloch members explore their technothrash side on an album that totally rules and will kick your ass, seriously. (8)

THE OTHER STUFF

COASTERS – Christmas With The Coasters

60 years after their first single, 10 years after the last original Coaster left the group (and this world) and with the longest-standing current member having joined in 2001, the best they can come up with an absolutely crap Christmas album full of cheap Casiotone synth brass and string sounds, no doo-wop harmonies, and a sax player who wouldn’t be worthy to clean the spit out of King Curtis’s mouthpiece. As a huge Coasters fan I am simply devastated. (1)

JEFFREY FOUCAULT – Salt As Wolves

Gorgeous country blues record highlighting Foucault’s sharp songwriting skills and well-worn voice backed by all-star band featuring Lucinda Williams’ guitarist, Morphine’s drummer and Booker T’s bassist. (8)

KINKY FRIEDMAN – The Loneliest Man I Ever Met

The original Texas jewboy, a very funny author but also the Frank Zappa of country and the man who gave us anthems like “How Can I Tell You I Love You (When You’re Sitting On My Face)”, “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore” and “Asshole From El Paso” is back with a much more somber (somberer?) album. Includes a duet with Willie Nelson and stripped-down versions of songs by Tom Waits and Warren Zevon. (7)

KISS THE ANUS OF A BLACK CAT – To Live Vicariously

In the age of bad band names this is probably the worst band name of them all. In any case gone is the Current 93-like apocalyptic folk of previous KTAOABC works, this sounds like early 80’s Fad Gadget industrial/electronica and it sort of sucks. (5)

ROOTS MANUVA – Bleeds

Impressively strong album by the British rapper who favors smooth flow and atmosphere over vocal pyrotechnics. (8)

Short Attention Span Record Reviews - Sep 2015 Part III

THE LOUDER STUFF

BOYSETSFIRE – Boysetsfire

Fierce but melodic post-hardcore heroes release a fantastic album, almost as good as “After The Eulogy”. (8)

DEAFHEAVEN – New Bermuda

Hipster metallers take it easy on the post-rock atmospherics this time around focusing on their black metal side, still look like altar boys. Sounds much better the third time you play it, ask me again after three more spins. (7)

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL – Zipper Down

GRAVEYARD – Innocence & Decadence

Enough already with the fucking 70’s worship. (6)

HORISONT – Odyssey

Did I say fucking 70’s worship? This is for fans of Uriah Heep, Rainbow (1st album only), Thin Lizzy etc., but the singer’s no Dio or Byron and the lyrics are no Lynott. (6)

KYLESA – Exhausting Fire

Kylesa have been gradually instilling their southern groove metal  with more melody, and this is their most melodic album yet. (7)

MUSTASCH – Testosterone

Hook-laden, good-times hard rock from the band with the best band name ever. (7)

MY DYING BRIDE – Feel The Misery

Dude, will you lighten up already? (7)

SABBATH ASSEMBLY – Sabbath Assembly

More metal than the weird religious cult stuff they did before but still, if you play this backwards make sure you’re holding something you can kill goats with. (6)

TESSERACT – Polaris

They keep changing singers more often than I change underwear (i.e. approximately once a year) and now Daniel Tompkins is back. If you liked the previous ones you’re gonna like this one as well. (7)

VI – De Praestigiis Angelorum

Members of Antaeus, Aosoth and Aborted create unholy black metal racket and make Deafheaven look like altar boys – oh wait. (8)

THE OTHER STUFF

CHRIS CORNELL – Higher Truth
Listening to a Cornell solo album in 2015 is like stalking an old girlfriend from 20+ years back on social media, you secretly hope that she might still be able/willing to give you pleasure but it won’t happen buddy plus you’re an idiot. (6)

DAVE ALVIN & PHIL ALVIN – Lost Time

Deep blues cuts by Big Joe Turner, Blind Boy Fuller, Leadbelly and others interpreted by the brothers from the Blasters. (7)

DRUNKEN PLAYER – The Bible And The Blues

Hillbilly barstool poets mix it up with blues, doowop, rockabilly, and country gospel. (7)

JOHN GRANT – Grey Tickles, Black Pressure

Pure genius. (9)

LANA DEL REY – Honeymoon

Lots of style and quite a bit of substance, so far this is probably Del Rey’s best set of torch songs for the terminally hip. (8)

MERCURY REV – The Light In You

Outsider pop cult heroes return after a 7-year hiatus, not much has changed in the meantime. (7)

PATTY GRIFFIN – Servant Of Love

Fantastic veteran Americana songwriter and former Robert Plant collaborator/love interest expands her sound with some jazz and Middle Eastern elements. Simply beautiful. (8)

RYAN ADAMS – 1989

He actually manages to make a Taylor Swift album sound like a Ryan Adams album. (8)

STEEP CANYON RANGERS – Radio

Great bluegrass sextet, made famous for backing comedian Steve Martin (an excellent banjo player) and Eddie Brickell on their musical adventures, hold their own on this fun album inorporating folk, blues and pop elements to their sound. (8)

THE NECKS – Vertigo

Minimalist experimental jazz trio, one 44-minute improvisation, induces trance state but could be challenging for those with short attention spans. (8)

Short Attention Span Record Reviews - Back To School 2015

THE LOUDER STUFF

AGAINST ME! – 23 Live Sex Acts

Totally live, warts and all, no overdubs, Laura Jane Grace & Co put on a hell of a show leaving you breathless and proving that the punk spirit still burns inside. (8)

CHRISTIAN MISTRESS – To Your Death

Heavy fucking metal the way it should fucking be. (8)

GRAVE PLEASURES – Dreamcrash

Grave Pleasures have risen out of the grave of Beastmilk, but offer slightly less pleasure. (7)

MAD SEASON & THE SEATTLE SYMPHONY – Sonic Evolution

Live recording with Chris Cornell and Duff McCagan filling in for the two dead guys: It would’ve ruled if it wasn’t for the fucking orchestra. (6)

RABBIT RABBIT – Rabbit Rabbit Radio, Vol. 3: Year of the Wooden Horse

Husband and wife team (un)known for their work with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and featuring a bunch of noisy guitarist guests start out with an avant-garde experiment and end up with a bunch of weirdly Pixies-like gems. (8)

SLAYER – Repentless

It sounds like Slayer and it looks like Slayer, all the signifiers are in place, yet somehow
it doesn’t feel like Slayer without Hanneman. But maybe it’s just me. (7)

THE LEGENDARY SHACK SHAKERS – The Southern Surreal

Another eclectic southern gothic mix of punk, rockabilly and country. Party time! (8)

TONY VISCONTI & WOODY WOODMANSEY’S HOLY HOLY – The Man Who Sold The World, Live In London

Tribute band led by Bowie’s original rhythm section from 1970, on stage, kicking ass. CD1 is “The Man Who Sold The World” album performed in its entirety, CD2 is other selections from Bowie’s 70s repertoire. Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory does a passable Bowie and Marc Almond makes a special guest appearance on a chilling “After All”. This has Bowie’s seal of approval so who are you to argue? (8)

UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS – The Night Creeper

Releasing “The Night Creeper” around the same time as Ghost’s “Meliora” is like offering a choice between brussels sprouts and lobster for dinner, and only vegans would choose this. (5)

THE OTHER STUFF

BEIRUT – No No No

Beirut’s melancholy pop worked fine for a couple of albums, but sounds much less exciting today. (6)

CHRIS CONNELLY – Decibels From The Heart

Always had a sweet spot for this cult early 90’s figure who, when not singing in 25 different industrial bands with assorted members of Ministry and Killing Joke, creates lush solo albums like this one which sounds like a cross between David Bowie and Marc Almond. (7)

CRAIG FINN – Faith In The Future

How can you NOT like an album with song titles like “Maggie I’ve Been Searching For Our Son”, “Sarah, Calling From A Hotel” and “I Was Doing Fine (Then A Few People Died)”? As a storyteller the guy’s Dylan, Springsteen and Waits all rolled into one! And the tunes are great even without the Hold Steady’s epic rock bombast. (8)

GIL SCOTT-HERON – Small Talk At 125th And Lenox (Re-issue)

His 1970 debut sounds quite different from the jazz-funk Scott-Heron became known for – this is militant spoken word, raw black poetry straight from the streets of Harlem, with just a couple of percussionists providing minimal instrumentation on most tracks. Re-issue of the year. (10)

JEFFREY DEAN FOSTER – The Arrow

Great tunes, catchy choruses, beautiful production, a sound that’s hard to categorize but might remind you of everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Fleetwood Mac, what’s not to like? (7)

JOAN SHELLEY – Over And Even

Shelley’s songs will make you dream of mountains, rivers, forests and a life you never had, city boy. (8)

JULIA HOLTER – Have You In My Wilderness

Holter’s orchestral/baroque pop is quite unique and hard to describe, all I can say is that this is gorgeous. (9)

MADDY AND TAE – Start Here

Pop-country music’s latest sensation come across as a hybrid between Taylor Swift and a teenage version of the Pistol Annies. (7)

NILS FRAHM – Late Night Tales

A strong addition to this exciting compilation series, modern classical composer Frahm goes for an eclectic mix that moves with ease between Vladimir Horowitz, Boards Of Canada, Miles Davis and Colin Stetson. (8)

Mixtape #4 - Baby That's Rock 'N' Roll 2015

Δεν έχω Σποτιφάϊ, δεν δουλεύει στο Ντουμπάϊ (I'm a fuckin' poet and I didn't even know it).

Και αφού δεν έχω Spotify, είπα να καταθέσω τα αποδεικτικά στοιχεία για το αντίθετο the old-fashioned way: Mixtape.

1. Ray Wylie Hubbard - Chick Singer, Badass Rockin'
2. JD McPherson - Head Over Heels
3. The Sonics - The Hard Way
4. The Young Novelists - Singer-Songwriter
5. Imperial State Electric - Maybe You're Right
...Oι Imperial State Electric του Nicke Andersson θα μπορούσαν κάλλιστα να έχουν ηχογραφήσει αυτό το power pop διαμάντι με τις a-la Beatles αρμονίες κάπου στο Texas το 1966...
6. The Orange Humble Band - You Close Your Eyes
7. Jimbo Mathus - Ready To Run
8. Tom Russell - He Wasn't A Bad Kid, When He Was Sober
Ο άνθρωπος έχει γράψει τραγούδια για τον Johnny Cash, έχει εκδώσει σε βιβλίο την αλληλογραφία του με τον Μπουκόφσκι, έχει πτυχίο Master's στην Εγκληματολογία, και μεταξύ άλλων έχει εργαστεί ως δάσκαλος εν μέσω εμφυλίου πολέμου στη Νιγηρία, ως μουσικός σε τσίρκο στο Πόρτο Ρίκο, και ως ταξιτζής στη Νέα Υόρκη. Για πες μου λίγο τι έχεις κάνει εσύ στη ζωή σου να δω κάτι;
9. Jason Isbell - 24 Frames

1. Pentagram - Earth Flight
2. The King Khan & BBQ Show - Illuminations
Πιο lo-fi δε γίνεται. Πιο fun δε γίνεται.
3. Barrence Whitfield & The Savages - I'm A Full Grown Man
4. Vintage Trouble - Angel City, California
5. Blackberry Smoke - Holding All The Roses
6. Lindi Ortega - Run Amuck
7. Whitey Morgan & The 78's - Waitin' 'Round To Die
8. Mischief Brew - Lancaster Avenue Blues
9. Frank Turner - Get Better

Short Attention Span Record Reviews - September Preview

THE LOUDER STUFF

IMPERIAL STATE ELECTRIC – Honk Machine
The Hellacopters go power pop. (8)

IRON MAIDEN – The Book Of Souls
OK. (7)

JOHN ZORN – The True Discoveries Of Witches And Demons
If you’re into prog then Zorn’s new instrumental ensemble will blow your mind to shreds, sort of like a jazz/metal version of Fantomas doing the weirdest rhythms King Crimson ever failed to come up with. (8)

MYRKUR – M
Sounds like mid-90’s Ulver, exploring Scandinavian folklore through a black metal prism. Interesting in concept, somewhat lacking in execution. (6)

NILE – What Should Not Be Unearthed
Look, it’s a Nile album, OK? It’s fast, it’s technical, it’s crushingly heavy, you’ve heard it before, it’s Morbid Angel doing songs about ancient Egypt. (7)

THE SWORD – High Country
From the Thin Lizzy shuffle of “Empty Temples” to the QOTSA pop of “Seriously Mysterious” The Sword are not afraid to take risks and try new things here, and most of them work. (7)

THE OTHER STUFF

BARRENCE WHITFIELD & THE SAVAGES – Under The Savage Sky
The best garage punk blues/soul rock ‘n’ roll shouter you’ve never heard of is back with his toughest, most in-your-face album yet. Dig! (8)

FKA TWIGS – M3LL155X
Sorry, I don’t get it. I just don’t. (6)

HOLY SONS – The Fall Of Man
Better known as Grails/Om drummer, Emil Amos plays most instruments himself on this album that sounds like Pavement doing 70’s AM soft rock. (7)

MOCEAN WORKER – Mocean Worker
The kind of pleasant-but-sort-of-generic electrofunk you’ll hear blasting in beach bars across the universe. (6)

PAUL SMITH & THE INTIMATIONS – Contradictions
Maximo Park frontman in side project that sounds just like Maximo Park minus the hooks. (6)

RAY WYLIE HUBBARD – The Ruffian’s Misfortune
Is this rock, or is it country, or is it the blues? Dunno. Does it kick ass? You bet! (8)

VARIOUS ARTISTS – Truckers, Kickers, Cowboy Angels: The Blissed-Out Birth Of Country Rock Vol. 5, 1972
The title is self-explanatory and this series just keeps getting better: Vol. 5 has The Byrds, JJ Cale, Townes Van Zandt, Ry Cooder, Kris Kristofferson, New Riders Of The Purple Sage, Pure Prairie League, John Prine, Everly Bros, Rick Nelson, Dan Fogelberg, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band etc. (9)

Short Attention Span Record Reviews - Summer In The City Version

THE LOUDER STUFF

CHELSEA WOLFE – Abyss
Apocalyptic distorted goth folk for black-clad, pale-skinned angsty post-teens, and I mean that in the best possible way. (7)

COSMIC PSYCHOS – Cum The Raw Prawn

Old Australian punks still sound uglier and funnier than the dozens of grunge bands they inspired 25 years ago. They still look uglier and funnier too. (7)

DISTURBED – Immortalized

With those soaring melodies and a relative scarcity of guitar solos you might be hesitant to call it “heavy metal”, but Disturbed’s unique brand of anthemic loud rock still makes for enjoyable listening. A solid comeback. (7)

ECSTATIC VISION – Sonic Praise

American style space rock, sort of like a lo-fi version of Monster Magnet’s version of Hawkwind. Fire up that bong! (7)

FEAR FACTORY – Genexus

Funny how 20 years ago Fear Factory’s ultra-compressed, mega-triggered industrial metal honestly sounded 20 years ahead of its time, and yet 20 years later shows its wrinkles. Still got a soft spot for them though. (7)

GHOST – Meliora

Definitely the catchiest tunes you’ll hear in 2015 from satanic mask-wearing ghouls – this glorious album officially elevates Ghost to the status of Rock ‘n’ Roll Saviours and will someday be regarded as a classic. (9)

KHEMMIS – Absolution

More Candlemass than St. Vitus, this is doom metal of the METAL variety with twin guitar leads and epic vocals and all that. (8)

LAMB OF GOD – VII: Sturm Und Drang

Slayer riffs galore and a venomous Blythe in great form make this the best LOG album since “Ashes Of the Wake”, probably. (8)

PENTAGRAM – Curious Volume

Half-crazed human wreck still sounds like a mud-covered Iggy Pop doing Black Sabbath. (8)

TEENAGE TIME KILLERS – Greatest Hits, Vol. 1

Given the range and sheer number of this hardcore/metal supergroup’s participants and guests (members of C.O.C., Clutch, Lamb Of God, Slipknot, Prong, Fear, Goatsnake, SUNNO)), Sacred Reich, Dead Kennedys, and of course Dave Grohl), the end result is not as exciting as it should be. Either that or I’m getting old. (6)

YEAR OF THE GOAT – The Unspeakable

Occult rockers return as Year Of The Muse or Muse Of The Goat or something, but it’s actually much better than what you’d imagine a satanic version of Muse should sound like. (7)

THE OTHER STUFF

ASHLEY MONROE – The Blade

Pistol Annie #3 releases a great solo album too, just like Miranda and Angaleena did last year. These country girls are on fire! (8)

DANIEL ROMANO – If I’ve Only One Time Askin’

Young Canadian country trobadour, a strong songwriter and storyteller steeped in the classic 70’s pop-country (i.e. non-outlaw) tradition. (7)

DR. DRE – Compton

Dr. Dre’s return (and, quite likely, farewell) is an all-star rap affair featuring Kendrick Lamar, Xzibit, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and others. Not his best, but solid. (7)

ELENI MANDELL – Dark Lights Up

The first words out of Eleni’s mouth on this live-in-the-studio recording are “I’m old fashioned” and it certainly sounds that way, with melodies and instrumentation that wouldn’t feel out of place on the Patsy Cline or Roger Miller catalogues. (7)

FRANK TURNER – Positive Songs For Negative People

Compared to 2013’s excellent “Tape Deck Heart” the folk punk star’s new album is rawer, but somewhat lacking oomph. He can still kick the ass of most singer-songwriters today though. (7)

GALACTIC – Into The Deep

Veteran New Orleans funk party band in top form plus superguests (Macy Gray, Mavis Staples etc.). Shake that booty! (8)

JASON ISBELL – Something More Than Free

My review back in June when I first got hold of a promo, was the following:
Isbell is a top-notch country rock songwriter and storyteller and all his albums are growers – you listen to them at first thinking “this is a solid (7)” but then you find yourself regularly seeking refuge in them years down the road. I’m pretty sure this one won’t be an exception so let’s admit that it’s really an (8+)
Now after the official release and repeated spins, I can confirm I was right. (8+)

JIM CROCE – The Definitive Croce
Comprehensive compilation of this wonderful early 70’s acoustic balladeer’s best work. Croce’s melodies and characters are guaranteed to put a bittersweet smile on your face. (9)

KRISTINE – Kristine

Cheesy 80’s AOR-lite nostalgia is apparently a proper genre now called synthwave and this Greek girl is its Goddess. It’s Berlin not Heart, 1988 Benatar not 1981 Benatar, Don Henley not Bon Jovi – hats off for getting the sound down perfectly but still needs work on the hooks. (6)

LINDI ORTEGA – Faded Gloryville

Lindi, will you marry me? (8)

THE FOGHORN STRINGBAND – Devil in The Seat

No Punch Brothers-experimentation or Old Crow Medicine Show-rockisms: The Foghorn Stringband’s version of bluegrass is as orthodox as it gets. (7)

THE LONDON SOULS – Here Come The Girls

Retro rock duo manage to sound surprisingly un-Black Keys/White Stripes-like, rather going for a late Beatles/Led Zep hybrid sound. (7)

THE ORANGE HUMBLE BAND – Depressing Beauty

15 tasty, jangly nuggets by this Australia-based power-pop supergroup led by an ex-Lime Spider and featuring A-list Americans (Big Star’s drummer plus a couple of Posies). (8)

THE YOUNG NOVELISTS – Made Us Strangers

Young Canadian sextet shows great promise – the bluegrass-y folk ballads are great, the garage rock numbers are groovy, and when their voices harmonize the result is delightful. (7)

VINCENT & MR. GREEN – Smash Up

Keefus Green is a long-time T-Bone Burnett associate with hip recent True Detective credentials. Jade Vincent likes to sing creepy torch song melodies over Green’s dance beats in a sexy, sultry voice that’ll make your knees wobble. The third album of this mysterious, under-the-radar duo sounds like absolutely nothing else you’ll hear in 2015. (8)

VINTAGE TROUBLE – 1 Hopeful Road

Too many soul ballads this time around and the more rocking numbers lack personality – there’s nothing as striking as “Blues Hand Me Down” or “Nancy Lee” on the new album. Disappointed, but I bet they kick major ass live. (6)

WILCO – Star Wars

Wilco gave this album away as a free download, and the least I can say is that it’s definitely value for money. (6)

Short Attention Span Record Reviews: July 2015 Referendum Version

VOTE "LOUDER"

AUTHOR & PUNISHER – Melk En Honing
Mad scientist makes his own instruments and uses them to create the most punishing industrial noise imaginable. (8)

BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME – Coma Ecliptic
BTBAM’s music is quite impressive like a Santiago Calatrava-designed building is impressive, you look at a Calatrava building thinking “wow, that’s impressive”, but imagine having to look at a Calatrava building FOR 70 FUCKING MINUTES STRAIGHT. (6)

BOSSE-DE-NAGE – All Fours
So you like Deafheaven-style hipster black metal and you’re looking for something new because Liturgy is so 2011? Well here it is, enjoy. (8)

FAILURE – The Heart Is A Monster
90’s cult alternative rock heroes, Tool protégées and one of Cave In’s major spiritual guides release comeback album after an 18-year hiatus. (7)

FUCKED UP – Year Of The Hare
Another 30-minute long art-punk EP consisting of just 2 songs. Not as strong as “Year Of The Dragon”. (7)

MISCHIEF BREW – This Is Not For Children
Folk-punk aficionados who enjoy the Dropkick Murphys, Gogol Bordello, New Model Army and beer will cream their shorts with this one. (8)

MUTOID MAN – Bleeder
Cave In mainman and Converge drummer go full-on metal on your ass and this riff-orama sounds absolutely huge. (8)

NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA – Skyline Whispers
Melodic hard rock shamelessly plagiarizing the pre-hair metal era of “Perfect Strangers”, “Slide It In” and “Frontiers”. If you can’t tap your foot and shake your booty to this you’re dead inside. (8)

REFUSED – Freedom
“The Shape Of Punk To Come” almost shaped the punk to come in 1998, and in a perfect world this divisive comeback album would finish the job. (9)

VOTE "OTHER"

CRAIG FINN – Newmyer’s Roof
The Hold Steady mainman releases 5-track EP as an appetizer for solo album coming in September, focuses on a stripped-down, less epic sound. But those lyrics… (7)

JENNY LYSANDER – Northern Folk
Laura Marling and Anais Mitchell fans should check this fantastic Swedish lady out. Also for all the weirdos out there who go ecstatic over obscure late-60’s acid folk, this is in the same vein. (8)

KACEY MUSGRAVES – Pageant Material
“Pageant Material” is “Last In Line” to “Same Trailer Different Park”’s “Holy Diver”: Exactly the same album as its predecessor, only slightly less great because it’s exactly the same album. (8)

KRISTIN DIABLE – Create Your Own Myth
The fantasically named Kristin Diable tries to create her own myth with her Dusty-flavored debut which mostly sounds like a darker Amy Winehouse. (8)

RICKIE LEE JONES – The Other Side Of Desire
Rickie goes to New Orleans to overcome her writer’s block and comes up with a decent piece of country- and blues-infused late-night listening. (7)

TERAKAFT – Alone (Tenere)
If you’re into Tinariwen’s “desert blues” vibe and groove then this is going to be right up your alley – the two bands sound virtually indistinguishable, at least to western ears. (7)

VARIOUS ARTISTS – Truckers, Kickers, Cowboy Angels: The Blissed-Out Birth of Country Rock, Vol. 4 1971
Another fun instalment in this series documenting the birth and rise of country rock and really, you should buy all of them. This one’s got Commander Cody, Gene Clark, Alex Harvey, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Flying Burrito Bros, The Band, New Riders Of The Purple Sage, JJ Cale, Delaney & Bonnie, Little Feat, Ry Cooder, Poco, Sir Douglas Quintet and many others. (9)

WILLIAM D. DRAKE – Revere Reach
Prog rock in the very English and most bucolic sense of the term from former Cardiacs keyboardist. Very un-rock ‘n’ roll but interesting. (7)

WILLIE NILE – The Bottom Line Archive Series: 1980 & 2000
Two live sets from the same venue, separated by 20 years, from a NYC singer-songwriter cult hero who knows how to rock a crowd. Raw, gritty and street-smart. (8)
