BLANCK MASS – In Ferneaux Blanck Mass’ electronic music, a combination of noise, EDM and industrial, is known to be aggressive and loud, but this time around it’s more ambient. (7)
NICK CAVE & WARREN ELLIS – Carnage It’s mind-boggling how this guy can release consistently great work throughout a 40+ year career, his face deserves a spot on rock’s Mount Rushmore next to the Bob Dylans and Neil Youngs of this world. This one bites harder than the last couple of minimalistic Bad Seeds albums in terms of instrumentation and texture. (9)
ALICE COOPER – Detroit Stories Building upon 2019’s “Breadcrumbs” EP, Alice pays tribute to his Detroit roots with some solid hard rockin’ garage punk and soul. Bob Ezrin produces, members of the MC5 and Grand Funk Railroad guest. Rocks pretty hard for a 73-year old! (7)
DEATH BY UNGA BUNGA – Heavy Male Insecurity Classic 90’s high-energy rock ‘n’ roll Norwegian style (e.g. Gluecifer, Turbo Negro) infused with some pop-punk silliness. (8)
DJANGO DJANGO – Glowing in the Dark Their best album to date, a fantastic, catchy and very danceable new wave/art rock/disco hybrid. (8)
THE HOLD STEADY – Open Door Policy The Rock band (with a capital “R”) that OWNED the 00’s is back with their best album since 2008’s “Stay Positive”. I love this. (8)
MAXIMO PARK – Nature Always Wins 7th album for the Northern England indie rockers, and probably their best one since that PERFECT 2005 debut. (8)
MELVINS – Working With God If you look beyond the silliness and jokes (e.g. opening the album with the Beach Boys’ “I Get Around” re-imagined as “I Fuck Around”, not one but two tracks titled “Fuck You”, etc.), you’ll find a cornucopia of ass-kicking metal riffs that would make Mastodon green with envy. It’s certainly a top-10 Melvins album, no mean feat considering they’ve probably released more than 30 to date (nobody’s counting, not even the band themselves). (8)
MOUSE ON MARS – AAI An electronic music experiment utilizing artificial intelligence both as a theme and as a tool, easier to admire than to enjoy. (6)
WILLIE NELSON – That’s Life Willie Nelson does Frank Sinatra tribute, how can this NOT be good? Certainly better than Bob Dylan’s “Shadows In the Night”. (8)
TINDERSTICKS – Distractions Sparser and more repetitive/hypnotic than the usual lush cinematic Tindersticks sound, half the songs on “Distractions” are terrific, the other half annoying. ((9 + 5)/2 = 7)
THE BESNARD LAKES – The Besnard Lakes Are The Last Of The Great Thunderstorm Warnings A truly epic psychedelic rock album and an early candidate for my year-end List. (9)
BLACK COUNTRY, NEW ROAD – For The First Time Seemingly out of nowhere, this young band releases its debut featuring buckets of chutzpah and a fully formed sonic identity – and even though it brings to mind a combination of great 90’s bands that went totally unnoticed (Firewater meets Lifter Puller, anyone?), these guys will actually make it big: Hottest new rock band out of the UK since the Arctic Monkeys. (9)
FARMER DAVE & THE WIZARDS OF THE WEST – Farmer Dave & The Wizards Of The West Byrds meets Grateful Dead meets Hawkwind meets Link Wray? It’s groovy, man! (7)
JIM GHEDI – In The Furrows Of Common Place Intriguing and totally out of time, this 2021 album by the Irishest-sounding guy ever has more in common with the John Faheys and the Fairport Conventions of this world than with anything belonging to this century. (7)
ARLO PARKS – Collapsed In Sunbeams If a 19-year old can write such a gorgeous record in her bedroom, there’s still hope for pop. (8)
NANCY SINATRA – Start Walkin’: 1965-1976 If you thought she didn’t record much worth remembering beyond “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’”, here’s a fantastic anthology of Nancy’s career and a testament to the genius of Lee Hazelwood. (9)
SOEN – Imperial A Venn diagram where 2000-2010 Opeth intersects Tool and Disturbed. (8)
AARON LEE TASJAN – Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan! A great pop rock album that sounds like something out of the Jeff Lynne late 80’s playbook (e.g. Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty’s “Full Moon Fever”). I still prefer “Silver Tears”, the best album of 2016 that didn’t make the List because I heard it too late, but still. (8)
THE WEATHER STATION – Ignorance Come December you’ll see this one topping several year-end lists from Pitchfork to Uncut, which would be quite an accomplishment for an album with a yacht rock vibe and speaks volumes for the quality of the songwriting. In any case, imagine “Mirage”-era Fleetwood Mac fronted by Margo Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies and you’ve got the general idea. (8)
YASMIN WILLIAMS – Urban Driftwood An extremely talented acoustic guitarist with a totally unique technique, Williams sounds unlike any other player out there. (8)
STEVEN WILSON – The Future Bites An intriguing pop album about consumerism and technology: It’s got songs close to No Man’s electronica-infused territory, and funky jams bringing to mind The Temptations and Prince, but very little that sounds like Porcupine Tree. And that’s fine. (8)
VARIOUS ARTISTS – Cuba: Music And Revolution Culture Clash in Havana, Cuba, Experiments in Latin Music 1975-85, Vol 1 The Buena Vista Social Club project introduced us to pre-revolutionary Cuban music, now this excellent collection digs deep into the Western-influenced music produced underground during the Castro years, blending the Latin stuff with jazz, rock and psychedelia, ending up sonically not too far from Brazil’s Tropicalia but with more brass. (8)
DALE CROVER – Rat-A-Tat-Tat! Melvins drummer’s solo album is a fun combination of poppy desert rock hooks and percussive weirdness. (7)
THE DIRTY NIL – Fuck Art Canadian pop-punk trolls with a juvenile sense of humor, just the way it should be. (7)
DREAD SOVEREIGN – Alchemical Warfare The guy from Primordial and his pet doom-meets-Venom metal project kick some ass. (8)
STEVE EARLE & THE DUKES – J.T. Steve’s touching farewell to his estranged son Justin Townes Earle who died of a drug overdose a few months ago. Great songs, great versions. (8)
EMINEM – Music To Be Murdered By - Side B 2020’s surprise-drop album surprise-rereleased with 16 extra tracks just to prove that, from a technical perspective, this rapper still got no competition. And I love the fact that he stays politically incorrect. (7)
BARRY GIBB – Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers Songbook, Vol 1 The only Bee Gee still standing countryfies hits and deep cuts from the band’s catalog with the help of Nashville royalty (Keith Urban, Jason Isbell, Alison Krauss, Little Big Town, Dolly Parton, Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow etc.). An excellent album. (8)
HERE LIES MAN – Ritual Divination Band that describes itself as “Afrobeat meets Black Sabbath” goes full-on Black Sabbath this time around, and it’s a blast! (8)
KRUDER & DORFMEISTER – 1995 People used to get REALLY stoned to K&D’s chillout, trip-hoppy mixes/remixes back in the 90’s. It’s good to have them back, even if we’re too old for bongs and Rizlas nowadays. (8)
DANIEL O’SULLIVAN & RICHARD YOUNGS – Twelve Of Hearts I consider myself an O’Sullivan fan and this collab album with Youngs is quite interesting, especially for obsessive compulsives like myself: Each song has exactly four chords that cycle without variation, never changing key. These self-imposed limitations force the musicians to focus on texture and dynamics, and the result is almost meditative in its deceptive simplicity. (7)
SLEAFORD MODS – Spare Ribs Why is this guy yelling in my face all the time? And why am I starting to like it? (8)
JAZMINE SULLIVAN – Heaux Tales A very good hip-hop infused R&B record. RYIL Lauryn Hill, Beyonce, Anderson .Paak. (8)
VARIOUS ARTISTS - Sumer Is Icumen In: The Pagan Sound Of British And Irish Folk 1966-75 There’s nothing I enjoy more than a compilation with an intriguing concept, and this 3-CD set focuses on folk music with a strong pagan flavor. You get the hits of the era of course (e.g. Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention, Incredible String Band, Traffic’s “John Barleycorn”…), but you’ll also discover a bunch of underground stuff that would make Mikael Åkerfeldt cream his pants. A real treasure cove (the compilation, not Åkerfeldt's pants). (9)
RYAN ADAMS – Wednesdays I’m not going to talk about the sexual misconduct allegations even though I’m pretty sure they will make this guy’s comeback a mission impossible, especially since one of the accusers is the latest hip music media darling. I’ll just talk about the music and it’s decent, not great, mostly low-key and semi-acoustic. The rockers (e.g. “Birmingham”) are the best tracks here, but they’re few and far between. (7)
CALEXICO – Seasonal Shift Holiday album, but a rather cheesy one and most likely the weakest recording of their career. (6)
NICK CAVE & NICHOLAS LENS – Litanies Belgian composer Lens specializes in operas, and this Music Greek has a special relationship with him. During lockdown he called up his buddy Nick Cave and asked him to write a libretto, hired whichever classical musician also happened to be stuck in Brussels to record the work, and this is it. (8)
CCR HEADCLEANER – Street Riffs Noisy Neanderthal riffs is all you need, really. (8)
CLUTCH – The Weathermaker Vault Series, Vol. I A series of digital-only releases of covers and re-recordings of Clutch classics now compiled and collected for CD and vinyl. Fans will appreciate. (8)
CHRIS CORNELL – No One Sings Like You Anymore Posthumous covers album with Cornell not only singing, but also performing all the instruments. Some of the originals have been big hits, others you’ve never heard of, but Cornell transforms all of them into something uniquely his own. (8)
ERIC HILTON – The Impossible Silence Second solo album this year from 1/2 of Thievery Corporation, this sounds more like Thievery Corporation than the previous one and it’s a pretty decent smooth electronica/chillout record. (7)
MARK LANEGAN – Dark Mark Does Christmas 2020 Xmas album takes a few tracks off a 2012 tour-only EP and adds some new recordings. Mostly covers, a couple of originals, Alain Johannes and Greg Dulli are on it too, doesn’t sound very festive but it’s Lanegan, what did you expect. I’d never realized that Roky Erickson’s “Burn The Flames” is a Xmas song, thanks Mark. (7)
BRENDAN PERRY – Songs Of Disenchantment: Music From The Greek Underground Dead Can Dance guy records an album of Rebetika. I am not impressed. (6)
SCOUR – Black (EP) Fancy some Phil Anselmo-led black metal? (7)
STURGILL SIMPSON – Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 2 (Cowboy Arms Sessions) Yet another bonkers album where Simpson reinterprets his own catalog in a bluegrass style. (7)
TAYLOR SWIFT – Evermore “Folklore Vol. 2”. (8)
THE WHITE STRIPES – Greatest Hits It’s no exaggeration to say that this is probably the greatest rock band of the 00’s, and of course “Seven Nation Army” will forever be remembered as an Anthem For The Ages like “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Whole Lotta Love” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”. This compilation is not chronologically sequenced but more like a live show would be, and this works fine. Time to rediscover! (10)
VARIOUS – Girls Go Power Pop! A superb follow-up to 2019’s compilation “Come On Let’s Go!”, this one focuses on the ladies. Runaways, Go-Go’s, Scandal, Juliana Hatfield, Muffs, Pretenders, Bangles, Pandoras, and a whole bunch of should’ve beens are included here and even if defining some of these groups as “power pop” is quite a stretch, this is very enjoyable listening. (9)
VARIOUS – Late Night Tales: Khruangbin We’ve discussed the “Late Night Tales” artist-curated compilation series here before, and the new instalment by Khruangbin is among the most eclectic ones featuring an obscure after-hours ethno-disco mix of artists from South Korea, Pakistan, Nigeria etc. (8)
Το καταραμένο 2020 φτάνει στο τέλος του και ο Music Geek, όπως κάθε χρόνο τέτοια εποχή, καταγράφει τους δίσκους που ξεχώρισε.
Η επίδραση του κορωνοϊού στη μουσική βιομηχανία υπήρξε φέτος καταλυτική: Κυκλοφορίες άλμπουμ καθυστέρησαν ή αναβλήθηκαν. Περιοδείες, η βασικότερη πλέον πηγή βιοπορισμού για τους περισσότερους καλλιτέχνες, ακυρώθηκαν. Πολλοί μουσικοί αναγκάστηκαν να αλλάξουν modus operandi κυκλοφορώντας EPs, ακουστικά άλμπουμ, ή live ηχογραφήσεις είτε για να εξασφαλίσουν ένα στοιχειώδες εισόδημα, είτε απλά για να μην τρελαθούν κλεισμένοι στο σπίτι. Αυτή η χρονιά δεν ήταν σαν καμία άλλη.
Αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι δεν υπήρξε καλή μουσική το 2020, το αντίθετο θα λέγαμε. Πριν δούμε όμως αναλυτικότερα 20 (περίπου) δίσκους που ξεχωρίσαμε, όχι απαραίτητα τους καλύτερους αλλά σίγουρα αυτούς που μας κράτησαν όρθιους φέτος, ας δούμε και μία «εναλλακτική» Λίστα όσων θα δείτε σε άλλες Λίστες Της Χρονιάς αλλά όχι στη δική μας, χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει ότι κάποια από αυτά δεν μας άρεσαν πολύ, ειδικά τα 4-5 πρώτα:
TAYLOR SWIFT διότι το indie folk εγχείρημά της ήταν εξαιρετικό αλλά αφού θα πάρει Grammy, δεν χρειάζεται τη δική μας επιβράβευση.
PHOEBE BRIDGERS διότι το “Punisher” ήταν βασικά μια απόδειξη ότι έχει το ταλέντο να μας προσφέρει ένα αληθινό αριστούργημα με τον επόμενο δίσκο της.
HAIM διότι πολύ ωραίο δισκάκι αλλά οι επιρροές παραείναι προφανείς.
WAXAHATCHEE διότι δεν ξέρω γιατί όχι, απλά δεν χώρεσε.
LUCINDA WILLIAMS διότι εξαιρετική τραγουδοποιός, αλλά δεν θα φτάσει ποτέ ξανά στα επίπεδα του “Car Wheels On A Gravel Road”.
CARIBOU διότι συμπαθητικό αλλά μέχρι εκεί.
FLEET FOXES διότι συμπαθητικό αλλά μέχρι εκεί.
YVES TUMOR διότι ούτε καν συμπαθητικό.
BILL CALLAHAN διότι δεν ξέρω, μάλλον φταίω εγώ, αλλά ο τύπος ποτέ δεν μου κάθισε καλά στο αυτί.
PERFUME GENIUS διότι μου είναι αντιπαθής.

Οι μεταλλάδες NAPALM DEATH, PROTEST THE HERO, FATES WARNING, DEFTONES που αν έφτιαχνα αμιγώς μεταλλική Λίστα θα ήταν σίγουρα μέσα, αλλά η Λίστα του Music Geek προσπαθεί να χωρέσει τα πάντα.

20. OUTLAWS OF RAVENHURST – Myths And Legends Προβοκατόρικη επιλογή, το ξέρω. Τι είναι οι Outlaws Of Ravenhurst; Μια παρέα ερασιτεχνών φίλων οι οποίοι λατρεύουν το χέβι μέταλ και τα κλισέ του αλλά δεν φοβούνται να αυτοσαρκαστούν, και βγάζουν δίσκους κυρίως για να διασκεδάσουν οι ίδιοι. Το “Myths And Legends” ξεχωρίζει από χιλιάδες άλλες φετινές μέταλ κυκλοφορίες (αν και κυκλοφόρησε στις 31/12/19) γιατί είναι απλώς ένα έργο αγνής και ανιδιοτελούς αγάπης, τίποτα παραπάνω, τίποτα λιγότερο. Βοηθάει βέβαια το ότι έχουν και γαμώ τα riffs, αν αυτός ο δίσκος είχε βγει το 1980 θα μνημονευόταν σήμερα ως cult αριστούργημα και ο Lars Ulrich θα το είχε μυθοποιήσει αναφέροντάς το σε κάθε του συνέντευξη και βάζοντας τους Metallica να διασκευάσουν το “The Crystal Princess”. Εγώ πέρασα τέλεια με αυτό το άλμπουμ, εσείς αν προτιμάτε καθίστε να ακούσετε «σοβαρά» μέταλ συγκροτήματα που κάνουν «τέχνη» όπως οι Oceans Of Slumber και οι King Witch.
19. STEFANO BOLLANI – Piano Variations On Jesus Christ Superstar …Και αφού μιλάμε για έργα αγάπης – πόση αγάπη πρέπει να έχει κάποιος για τη μυθική ροκ όπερα των Webber/Rice (που φέτος έκλεισε τα 50) ώστε να επιχειρήσει να την ερμηνεύσει ολόκληρη με μόνο όπλο ένα πιάνο; Αυτός ο παράξενος Ιταλός τζαζίστας, που προφανέστατα είχε φάει κάποτε τεράστιο εφηβικό κόλλημα με το “Jesus Christ Superstar” (he was a teenage music geek!) το αποτόλμησε και το αποτέλεσμα είναι ένας πραγματικός θρίαμβος. Σ’ αγαπάω ρε φίλε.
18. CHRIS STAPLETON – Starting Over Παρόλο που ο Stapleton έχει κατηγοριοποιηθεί ως “country” τα τραγούδια του αποτελούν ένα ολοκληρωμένο αμάλγαμα κάθε Αμερικανικής μουσικής παράδοσης (εκτός ίσως από τη jazz): Το “Starting Over” ακουμπάει και στο rock, και στο blues, και στη soul/gospel. Αυτή τη φορά, εκτός από τον μόνιμο παραγωγό του Dave Cobb, o Stapleton έχει στο πλευρό του και δύο βασικά μέλη της μπάντας του Tom Petty και το αποτέλεσμα είναι το πιο μεστό άλμπουμ της καριέρας του – αν κάποιος θα έπρεπε να βαφτιστεί «νέος Tom Petty» σήμερα, δεν θα ήταν ιεροσυλία αν ο τίτλος πήγαινε σ’ αυτόν.
17. KATATONIA – City Burials Εδώ και χρόνια οι Katatonia χαράζουν τη δική τους πορεία με έναν ήχο που στην πραγματικότητα δεν μοιάζει με κανένα από τα συγκροτήματα με τα οποία συνήθως ομαδοποιούνται (Opeth, Anathema κλπ.). Δεν θέλω όμως να επικεντρωθώ στον ήχο, αλλά στο συναίσθημα και στη μοναδική ικανότητα των Katatonia να πατάνε συγκεκριμένα «κουμπιά» του ακροατή, κάτι το οποίο κάνει με ιδιαίτερη επιτυχία και το “City Burials” το οποίο πατάει τόσα κουμπιά μέσα μου ώστε παίζει τα συναισθήματά μου σαν μπαντονεόν.
16. TIGRAN HAMASYAN – The Call Within Ένας jazz δίσκος που θυμίζει συνεργασία των Meshuggah με τους Cocteau Twins, το “The Call Within” μας συστήνει έναν Α Π Ι Σ Τ Ε Υ Τ Ο πιανίστα/συνθέτη και μία rhythm section που θα σας στραμπουλήξει τα αυτιά. Εκπληκτική αίσθηση της μελωδίας με πολλά στοιχεία από την παραδοσιακή μουσική της Αρμενίας από όπου προφανώς κατάγεται ο Hamasyan, prog ρυθμοί, και μια ατμόσφαιρα αρχαία και ταυτόχρονα σημερινή, το “The Call Within” νιώθει εξίσου άνετα δίπλα στον Keith Jarrett (βασικό σημείο αναφοράς για όλη την πιανιστική jazz) και στους Animals As Leaders (των οποίων ο Tosin Abasi μάλιστα συμμετέχει σε ένα κομμάτι).
15. DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS – The Unraveling / The New OK
Τον Ιανουάριο οι DBT κυκλοφόρησαν ένα από τα καλύτερα και πιο
πολιτικοποιημένα άλμπουμ της καριέρας τους περιγράφοντας την άθλια
κατάσταση στη χώρα τους. Και μετά έγινε της πουτάνας… Χωρίς δυνατότητα
να περιοδεύσουν έγραψαν και ηχογράφησαν πατ-κιουτ μερικά νέα τραγούδια,
σουλούπωσαν και κάποια leftovers από το πρόσφατο παρελθόν και τον
Οκτώβριο κυκλοφόρησαν, εεε, ένα από τα καλύτερα και πιο πολιτικοποιημένα
άλμπουμ της καριέρας τους. Αν είχαμε άλλες δέκα μπάντες σαν και δαύτους
ο κόσμος θα ήταν λίγο καλύτερος.
14. KVELERTAK – Splid Έχω την αίσθηση ότι το συγκεκριμένο άλμπουμ πέρασε μάλλον απαρατήρητο, πιθανότατα διότι η κυκλοφορία του συνέπεσε με την εκρηκτική εξάπλωση της πανδημίας. Πρόκειται όμως για μια εξαιρετική δουλειά, ίσως ο πιο ώριμος δίσκος των Νορβηγών μπουνταλάδων και με καινούργιο τραγουδιστή μάλιστα ο οποίος φέρνει μαζί του μια ευρύτερη ερμηνευτική γκάμα από τον προκάτοχό του, καθώς και τον περιστασιακό Αγγλικό στίχο. Μέταλ, σατανίλα, χαβαλές, και (φυσικά) κουκουβάγιες.
13. JASON ISBELL & THE 400 UNIT – Reunions Southeastern – Something More Than Free – The Nashville Sound: Τι στο διάολο κάνεις μετά από μια τέτοια τριάδα αλμπουμάρες; Αν βγάλεις κάτι στο ίδιο στυλ θα αρχίσουν οι γκρίνιες ότι επαναλαμβάνεσαι, ή ότι “καλό είναι αλλά όχι σαν το Southeastern”. Μπορείς να ακολουθήσεις το παράδειγμα του φίλου σου του Sturgill και να βγάλεις κάτι τελείως διαφορετικό με άγνοια κινδύνου, αλλά το να δαγκώσεις το χέρι που σε ταΐζει είναι δίκοπο μαχαίρι. Ή μπορείς να κάνεις αυτό που κάνει εδώ ο Isbell διαφοροποιώντας ελαφρώς το ύφος του, όχι σε βαθμό του να γίνει αγνώριστος, αλλά ενσωματώνοντας στον ήχο του μια μέχρι πρότινος αφανή αγάπη για τον Mark Knopfler, ας πούμε, και αφήνοντας το ώριμο songwriting/storytelling του να λάμψει.
12. MARIA SCHNEIDER ORCHESTRA – Data Lords Εμείς οι περί jazz αδαείς μάθαμε για την ύπαρξη της Maria Schneider χάρη στον David Bowie που δήλωνε θαυμαστής της και με τον οποίο συνεργάστηκε το 2014. Με το “Data Lords” λοιπόν εντυπωσιάστηκα: Big band jazz με πραγματικά επαναστατικό ήχο, σύγχρονο/φουτουριστικό αλλά πατώντας στην παράδοση με αναφορές στον Gil Evans και στην progressive jazz φάση του Stan Kenton (λέω τώρα εγώ, ο άσχετος). Ή για να το πούμε πιο απλά για όλους εσάς τους εξίσου άσχετους περί jazz: Τέτοιο πράμα δεν έχετε ξανακούσει από τότε που ανακαλύψατε τον Kamasi, αλλά η Schneider είναι καλύτερη. Μόνο μην ψάχνετε να ακούσετε από Spotify ή Youtube, η κυρία είναι κατά και με επιχειρήματα, μόνο αυτό θα βρείτε:
11. KILLER BE KILLED – Reluctant Hero
Οι Max Cavalera (Sepultura κλπ.), Troy Sanders (Mastodon) και Greg Puciato (Dillinger Escape Plan) ενώνουν για άλλη μία φορά τις δυνάμεις τους και μοιράζουν τα φωνητικά, έχοντας αυτή τη φορά μαζί τους στα ντραμς τον Ben Koller (Converge) σε αυτό το metal supergroup/side project. Το “Reluctant Hero” συνδυάζει αρμονικά στοιχεία από το παρελθόν όλων των μελών του συγκροτήματος χωρίς να θυμίζει κάποιο από αυτά συγκεκριμένα – ως σύνολο περισσότερο φέρνει στο μυαλό τις καλύτερες στιγμές των High On Fire, ας πούμε, και όπως και να ’χει πρόκειται για μια από τις κορυφαίες metal κυκλοφορίες της χρονιάς: Ομολογώ πως το άκουσα περισσότερο από το τελευταίο Mastodon, ή από οτιδήποτε έχει κάνει ο Cavalera τα τελευταία 20 χρόνια και βάλε.
10. MARIA McKEE – La Vita Nuova Από υπερενεργητική πιτσιρίκα frontwoman-δυναμίτης στο 80’s cowpunk σχήμα Lone Justice σε power ballads για ταινίες του Tom Cruise, από εκεί σε μία σειρά από προσωπικά άλμπουμ χαμηλού προφίλ και στη συνέχεια σε 13 ολόκληρα έτη σιωπής, η πορεία της McKee έχει υπάρξει γεμάτη απότομες στροφές. Η πιο αναπάντεχη όμως από αυτές ήρθε το 2020 με το “La Vita Nuova”: Η McKee επιστρέφει με έναν δίσκο ατρόμητο, με πλούσιες ενορχηστρώσεις, πολύπλοκες μελωδίες κι έναν σχεδόν οπερατικό τρόπο ερμηνείας που στην pop ανθρωπογεωγραφία την τοποθετεί κάπου ανάμεσα στην Kate Bush και την Ute Lemper. Αυτά δεν είναι τραγούδια εύκολα να τα πει κανείς, οποιαδήποτε τραγουδίστρια με φωνητικές δυνατότητες κατώτερες της McKee θα το είχε κάνει σούπα, αυτή όμως το κάνει συγκλονιστικό.
9. JEFF ROSENSTOCK – No Dream Διασκεδαστικό, θυμωμένο, νευρωτικό, αστείο, πολιτικό, προσωπικό, το καλύτερο punk άλμπουμ της χρονιάς είναι προσιτό χωρίς να κάνει συμβιβασμούς σε αυθεντικότητα – εκεί δηλαδή που χάνει το παιχνίδι ο Machine Gun Kelly με το φετεινό Blink-182 karaoke του. Στις πιο pop στιγμές του το “No Dream” θυμίζει τις καλύτερες στιγμές των Weezer σε πιο βαβουριάρικη έκδοση αλλά δεν παραλείπει να hardcore-ίσει εκεί που πρέπει, filler ούτε για δείγμα, κάθε τραγούδι είναι τέλειο και το ένα κυλάει ιδανικά μέσα στο επόμενο. Θέλω να τον δω live να το παίζει ολόκληρο όταν τελειώσει όλη αυτή η ιστορία.
8. SETH LAKEMAN – A Pilgrim’s Tale Μέλος της μπάντας του Robert Plant, ο πολυοργανίστας Lakeman κυκλοφόρησε ένα ολοκληρωμένο και πολύ Αγγλικό concept album βασισμένο στο προ 400 ετών επικό ταξίδι του Mayflower από το Plymouth στη Μασαχουσέτη. Με αυτή τη θεματολογία και με φιλοδοξίες στα όρια της μεγαλομανίας (γνωστός ηθοποιός σε ρόλο αφηγητή κλπ.), το “A Pilgrim’s Tale” θα μπορούσε να είναι prog (φανταστείτε ένα supergroup ονόματι Lakeman που θα αποτελείτο από τον Greg Lake και τον Rick Wakeman, τέλειο;;;), αλλά δεν είναι prog: Είναι folk. Πολύ folk, αν μου έλεγε κάποιος ότι τα τραγούδια είναι γραμμένα την εποχή του συγκεκριμένου ταξιδιού θα το έχαφτα. Μεγάλο ρίσκο που θα μπορούσε να έχει σκάσει στα μούτρα του δημιουργού του, αλλά he pulled it off: Απροσδόκητα, το άλμπουμ που προσωπικά άκουσα φέτος περισσότερο από οποιοδήποτε άλλο, μαζί με της McKee.

7. MR. BUNGLE – The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo Ο καλύτερος metal δίσκος που δεν κυκλοφόρησε το 1986 – εκείνη τη χρονιά οι, κουλοί έφηβοι ακόμα, Mr. Bungle ηχογράφησαν ένα demo με τίτλο “The Raging Wrath Of The Easter Bunny”, που το μόνο που κατάφερε ήταν να τραβήξει την προσοχή των Faith No More που έψαχναν για τραγουδιστή. Αυτό το crossover thrash demo δεν είχε και πολύ μεγάλη σχέση με τα όσα έκανε το συγκρότημα αργότερα, ούτε μπορούσε κανείς να καταλάβει πολλά πράγματα λόγω του χάλια παιξίματος και της πιο χάλια παραγωγής. Πολλά-πολλά χρόνια αργότερα όμως η βασική τριάδα των Bungle Patton/Spruance/Dunn στρατολογεί δύο φιλαράκια (αχέμ, Scott Ian και Dave Lombardo) και το επανηχογραφούν όπως θα έπρεπε να είναι. Το βάζεις να παίζει και δεν ξέρεις αν θες να κάνεις slam dancing μόνος σου ρίχνοντας κλωτσομπουνίδια στον εαυτό σου, ή να σκάσεις από τα γέλια, ή και τα δύο.
6. LAURA MARLING – Song For Our Daughter Πανέμορφο άλμπουμ που απευθύνεται σε μία υποθετική κόρη της, το “Song For Our Daughter” παίρνει τις Βορειομερικανικές επιρροές της Marling -Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell- και τις φιλτράρει μέσα από ένα Αγγλικό πρίσμα. Απλές αλλά μεστές συνθέσεις, ενορχηστρώσεις εξαιρετικές μέσα στη λιτότητά τους, και μία αγγελική φωνή είναι τα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά του καλύτερου «θηλυκού» δίσκου της χρονιάς για όσους βρήκαν τη φετεινή Fiona Apple υπερβολικά στριφνή και Waits-ιανή.
5. BOB DYLAN – Rough And Rowdy Ways Αν είσαι μουσικοκριτικός είναι υποχρεωτικό να βάλεις αυτό τον δίσκο του Dylan στην εικοσάδα – το γράφει στο job description: Μετά και το Νόμπελ το τοτεμικό του στάτους στην κορυφή της πυραμίδας παρέα με τους Beatles και τους Rolling Stones, ένα σκαλοπάτι πάνω από τους Neil Young και Leonard Cohen με τους οποίους γίνονται και οι συχνότερες συγκρίσεις, δεν είναι δυνατόν να αμφισβητηθεί από κοινούς θνητούς. Και το επιβεβαιώνει με το 39ο (!) άλμπουμ του σε 60 (!) χρόνια καριέρας, ένα μνημειώδες δημιούργημα που αποτελεί την κορυφαία του κυκλοφορία σίγουρα από το “Time Out Of Mind” του 1997, ίσως ακόμα και από το “Blood On The Tracks” του 1975.
4. AC/DC – Power Up Το “Power Up” δεν είναι “Powerage”, δεν θα μπορούσε άλλωστε. Αν όμως το “Back In Black” ήταν ένας ιδανικός αποχαιρετισμός στον Bon Scott τότε το “Power Up” είναι ένας ιδανικός αποχαιρετισμός στον Malcolm Young: Η πεντάδα εδώ δείχνει να το καταφχαριστιέται, τα riffs καθιστούν κάθε προσπάθεια αντίστασης στο headbanging μάταιη, τα ρεφρέν είναι γηπεδικά και πιασάρικα. Ψυχρά αντικειμενικά είναι (στην καλύτερη περίπτωση) το ένατο καλύτερο άλμπουμ της καριέρας τους, αλλά για όποιον έχει ζωγραφίσει έστω και μια φορά το λογότυπό τους πάνω σε θρανίο ή έχει φορέσει ραφτό/κονκάρδα AC/DC, εδώ δεν χωράνε αντικειμενικότητες: Αν αυτή ήταν η τελευταία φορά που μπήκαν σε στούντιο, δεν θα μπορούσαν να μας είχαν αποχαιρετήσει με καλύτερο τρόπο. We salute you.
3. FIONA APPLE – Fetch The Bolt Cutters Οι γονείς της ήταν καλλιτέχνες οπότε φυσικά το μήλο έπεσε κάτω από τη μηλιά (συγνώμη). Οι καρποί της θέλουν χρόνο να ωριμάσουν (συγνώμη) αφού αυτό είναι το 5ο μόλις άλμπουμ της σε 25 έτη καριέρας, κάθε φορά όμως που έχει νέα κυκλοφορία χτυπάει εικοσάδα χαλαρά και οι κριτικοί παθαίνουν ντελίριο λες και είναι ο Bob Dylan, στο φετινό άλμπουμ του οποίου παρεμπιπτόντως επίσης συμμετέχει. Τα περί εικοσάδας και ντελίριου προφανώς ισχύουν και για το “Fetch The Bolt Cutters” το οποίο θα χαρακτήριζα ποικιλιακά ως Delicious (συγνώμη), ένα κόκκινο γυαλιστερό γλυκόξινο αριστούργημα.
2. RUN THE JEWELS – RTJ4 Υπάρχει ένα κομμάτι εδώ μέσα που περιέχει τους εξής στίχους: “You so numb you watch the cops choke out a man like me/Until my voice goes from a shriek to whisper—‘I can’t breathe’/And you sit there in the house on couch and watch it on TV”. Το άλμπουμ ηχογραφήθηκε πριν από τη δολοφονία του George Floyd άρα το τραγούδι προφανώς δεν γράφτηκε γι’ αυτόν, και αυτό ακριβώς είναι το τραγικό της υπόθεσης: Έχουν υπάρξει πολλοί George Floyd, και σίγουρα θα υπάρξουν κι άλλοι όσο ο ρατσισμός παραμένει βαθιά χαραγμένος στο συλλογικό μας ασυνείδητο. Το RTJ4 έκανε αυτό που έπρεπε να κάνει γύρω από το θέμα, εσύ τι θα κάνεις;
1. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN – Letter To You Είσαι 71. Δεν έχεις τίποτα να αποδείξεις. Μαζεύεις τα μέλη της E-Street Band μετά από χρόνια από τις 4 γωνιές του πλανήτη, τους χώνεις σε ένα στούντιο, ηχογραφείτε live 12 τραγούδια μέσα σε 5 μέρες και, τόσο απλά, φτιάχνεις τον δίσκο της χρονιάς. Γι’ αυτό σε αποκαλούν “The Boss” άλλωστε, επειδή το κάνεις να μοιάζει εύκολο. Όσο για το “Ghosts” που εσύ υποστηρίζεις ότι αναφέρεται στoυς πεσόντες συντρόφους από τη μπάντα σου, τον Clarence Clemons και τον Danny Federici, δεν μου το βγάζεις απ’ το μυαλό ότι στην πραγματικότητα σκεφτόσουν και τον Tom Petty, έτσι δεν είναι; Έλα τώρα, παραδέξου το, αλλιώς γιατί να στήσεις όλο το τραγούδι πάνω σε μια παραλλαγή του riff του “Free Fallin’”; Όχι ότι έχει καμία σημασία πάντως, ειδικά αφού μας χάρισες τα έξι πιο υμνικά, ευφορικά λεπτά αυτής της σκατοχρονιάς. Σε ευχαριστούμε.
BLOOD FROM THE SOUL – DSM-5 Experimental sci-fi themed metal/hardcore supergroup led by Napalm Death’s Shane Embury and featuring members of Converge, Megadeth and Nasum sounds more like Voivod than any of the aforementioned. (7)
JESU – Terminus Justin Broadrick (Godflesh) on some great guitar-oriented droning rock. Quite shoegaze-y, rather different from previous Jesu works. (8)
JUCIFER – نظم (Nazm) …And the WTF Album Of The Month Award goes to this sludge/stoner metal band that just released an album of what sounds like traditional Pakistani trance music. (?)
KATATONIA – Dead Air They released one of the best metal albums of the year but weren’t able to tour for it so here’s a lockdown live show, featuring 20 fan-chosen songs. (8)
KILLER BE KILLED – Reluctant Hero Supergroup including members of Soulfly, Mastodon, Dillinger Escape Plan and Converge on second album of heavy metal goodness. Fans of all the aforementioned bands and/or High On Fire will love this. (8)
LITURGY – Origin Of The Alimonies This band was controversial even before the leader came out as transgender, which I don’t have a problem with. What I do have a problem with is all the pretentious bullshit messing up what would be an otherwise pretty decent experimental album trying to bridge Mayhem with La Monte Young. And I miss Greg Fox’s drumming. (6)
MY DYING BRIDE – Macabre Cabaret Stuck at home and unable to tour, gothic doom veterans release EP just a few months after their latest full-length and it’s depressing as hell, in a good way I mean. (7)
REFUSED – The Malignant Fire Influential hardcore band made the List last year, follow up that great album with an equally great EP. (8)
WARRIOR SOUL – Cocaine And Other Good Stuff An interesting set of covers. Some expected choices (Hendrix, Kiss, Van Halen, Motorhead, Alice Cooper, Grand Funk Railroad, Judas Priest), some welcome surprises (Cars, JJ Cale, KC & the Sunshine Band), Kory Clarke still sounds like Marianne Faithfull on her deathbed. (7)
THE OTHER STUFF
NICK CAVE – Idiot Prayer: Nick Cave Alone At Alexandra Palace 22 career-spanning classics (including one new track) performed live in an empty concert hall, just Cave and his piano. Hauntingly beautiful. (9)
CHRIS CONNELLY – Graveyard Sex Industrial God Connelly (The Damage Manual, Die Warzau, Finitribe, KMFDM, Ministry, Murder Inc., Pigface, Revolting Cocks) has a new album and it’s his most Goth work yet, probably a tribute to his fallen comrade Bill Rieflin. (7)
LARKIN POE – Kindred Spirits Blues rock siblings released a fantastic proper album with a full band earlier this year but have also been known to do great stripped-down covers on their Youtube channel, and this lockdown album is based on that concept: Songs by Lenny Kravitz, Neil Young, Phil Collins, Moody Blues, Allman Brothers, Elton John etc. get the sisters treatment. (8)
GWENIFER RAYMOND – Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain If you thought you knew what an acoustic guitar can do, check out this John Fahey-influenced Welsh player and prepare to have your mind blown. (8)
CHRIS STAPLETON – Starting Over Another excellent album from Stapleton combining his country, rock, and soul influences into a no-filler set of killer tunes. What a voice! (8)
THE WAR ON DRUGS – Live Drugs A nice reminder of what we love about a good live show, even for people like me who are not the greatest fans of this particular fashionable band’s “Dire Straits Meet The Waterboys” style. (7)
AC/DC – Power Up A solid effort, recognizably AC/DC even with Malcolm gone. (8)
DAVID BOWIE – Metrobolist Quite probably my favorite album of all time, certainly Bowie’s heaviest by far, remastered and re-released with its original title and alternative album cover. (11)
CARCASS – Despicable An EP serving as an appetizer for the next full-length album, this is prime quality melodic death metal from the folks who invented this stuff. (8)
FATES WARNING – Long Day Good Night Writing this after only two spins and as a lifelong fan – a very good prog metal album, but not the instant classic masterpiece that 2016’s “Memories Of Flight” was. That being said this is Fates Warning, so it might still click on a much deeper level and devastate the soul a couple dozen listens down the road. (8)
MELVINS – Hostile Ambient Besides A very fun set of covers (Mott The Hoople, Gun Club, Alice Cooper, Ramones…), consisting of B-sides from singles originally released in 2002-2003. (8)
MR. BUNGLE – The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo Mr. Bungle core trio of Mike Patton / Trevor Dunn / Trey Spruance recruit thrash totems Dave Lombardo and Scott Ian to re-record their largely unknown original demo from 1986 and have as much fun as humanly possible while doing it. This record has nothing to do with the weirdness Mr. Bungle is known for, it’s pure old-school thrash/crossover (including nods to S.O.D. and C.O.C.), but IT KICKS SO MUCH ASS! Simply put, this is the best violent moshing fun you’ll have for months to come. (9)
PUSCIFER – Existential Reckoning Recommended if you can’t wait 13 years for the next Tool album to listen to Keenan. (7)
SOLSTAFIR – Endless Twilight of Codependent Love If you were quarantined in Iceland, not able to get out of the house during half the year when there are 21 hours of sunlight every day, you’d play depressing music like this too. (8)
THE OTHER STUFF
CORDOVAS – Destiny Hotel Americana/roots rock sounds reminiscent of the Grateful Dead, but less jammy. (7)
FATBOY SLIM – Back To Mine The “Back To Mine” series is based on a simple premise: Invite a musician or DJ to create a chill-out mix album based on what they would listen at home after a night out. Vol. 31 features Fatboy Slim’s selections, and I’d rather chill-out with the Faithless and Talvin Singh volumes. (6)
SAM ROBERTS BAND – All Of Us Arena rock made in Canada, sort of like a cross between Bruce Springsteen and U2. (7)
SKYWAY MAN – The World Only Ends When You Die A cosmic country rock opera. (7)
